We live in an era of distracted, fragmented reading shaped by algorithms. Against this backdrop, the book stands as something worth defending — a physical object that demands slow, full attention. Reference Library is an exhibition born from this conviction.

A book carries memory: the person who gave it to you, the place you read it, who you were then. Passed between people, it becomes a quiet way of saying I thought of you. Given at the right moment, it can move you, change your mind, make you start over. Few things in life can do all of that.

Conceived by Apartamento in collaboration with JIL SANDER, the exhibition brings together sixty books from around the world — each chosen by a writer, designer, artist, architect, filmmaker, or thinker whose perspective is worth knowing. Taken together, they form more than a reading list: a portrait of curiosity, influence, and the invisible threads connecting a reader to an idea.

Designed by Milanese studio studioutte, the installation features chrome lecterns in rows, each lit by a warm beam, reflections carried back by a mirrored wall. Visitors register for one of 60 hourly slots, enter the library, and are handed white gloves — a small ritual that shifts how carefully you handle something. The books can be picked up, opened, read. The gloves are yours to keep.

REFERENCE LIBRARY runs at the JIL SANDER showroom in central Milan, April 20–24, 2026. Sixty books, sixty perspectives: open doors, any one of which might find you at exactly the right moment.
